Do you support "Scotland for Marriage?"

Scotland for Marriage is the group, led by key figures in the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland, which opposes extending marriage to same sex couples in Scotland. They held a march in Edinburgh, yesterday, attended by 200 people and are splashing the cash on media adverts to promote response to the Scottish Government's consultation on the issue.

The Iowa legislature has been tackling the same issue, here. Have a look at what this young man had to say.

It's never too late to change your mind.

I am a Christian, I believe in the sanctity of marriage and I believe in religious freedom.

That is why I believe in equal marriage, neither the state nor other churches have any business telling my church that it cannot marry gay couples.

Anonymous, you are not alone. Many Christians and people from other religions support equal marriage and many religious organisations would like to offer it.

Allowing equal marriage would give them the freedom to do that, while not compelling those who don't wish to. It's a win all around.

I find opposition to gay marriage just bewildering. Why on earth would you want to stop two people who love each other from getting married?
My nephew, like the lad in the video, is brought up by a same-sex couple as will his sibling be when s/he arrives in February.

@ Ellen

Because the function of marriage has never just been about two people loving each other...?

What's lacking in this debate is any sense of why marriage is worthwhile and should be supported by the state. If it's just about love, are you saying that all those who don't get married or can't commit for a lifetime of fidelity don't really love each other?

The traditional view of the function of marriage is that it best serves the procreation and successful rearing of the next generation. If we're going to junk that, then fine, but let's first have a proper debate about the best way to raise children rather than pretending this is just about love and equal rights for gay people.
